Good Start for July. July will involve a roadtrip to Bangalore ( 01 week) and a Lasik Surgery if all goes as planned. So Will try to run as much as possible before this. There is a group of runners which runs from Otters Club to Nariman Point ( about 20 km) every first Sunday of the month. Yesterday, I ran this run covering the distance in 3 hours! This may be a bit too long......but considering I was taking photographs on the way etc......I think I can do this distance in 2 Hrs. 30 Mins. Will try for this next time. Besides yesterday's aim was to complete the distance. It was raining on and off , this is probably a good thing.

the Journey to a 1000 Miles starts with a single step ! ( posted 10-06-2011)

1000 Miles = total distance to run.
185 Miles = total distance ran since January, 2011
81.54%   = Distance still to cover.

The month of May proved to be a lackluster one. It began with a decision to stay off the treadmill for 15 days to recuperate as I felt this was required ( I was over exercising and was beginning to feel the pressure on my legs). However, after 15 days the inertia of laziness took over  and activities of the treadmill were limited to 3 or 4 times only !  And an unhealthy feeling started creeping in. A conscious effort is underway to make up for lost time and  June promises to be more exciting and eventful.

June Log.
01/06 -    9.5 km.
03/06 -  10.5 km.
04/06 -  15.3 km. ( was record )

20/06-   22.22 km.( record till date- entry to Half Marathon Club)
22/06-   13.33 km.
25/06-   14.10 km
30/06-   11. Km ( carter road, joggers park)

TOTAL OF JUNE = 127 km.

( posted 19/06/2011) On Saturday morning, I did my first run outdoors on the beach ( along side Pooru the Guru). It was a bad day for running form me  for many reason. I ended up doing only 6 km. Later, I thought I should have pushed it to 10km at least! I couldn't get a wink of sleep the night before and had to drive one hour till the beach. This was very  bad preparation ( archived under " How not to prepare fo a run". In spite of all this, I felt the  need to do this even if I  run only for a short distance as I had missed out on the Sunday run last week. I had made much ado about the Sunday run just to end up in no show!
Running on controlled environment in a gym on a treadmill proved to be a much easier task than running outdoors. There are external factors at play  here- the friction of the sand, wind, having to look where you r going etc. But I also feel that the real challenge is to run outdoors. I will try to run outdoors at least once a week henceforth.
(posted 20/06/2011) Just came back from the gym after doing a full binary figure of 22.22 km. Well, this is a record for me till date and also my entry to the Half- Marathon Club. So, one can say that one is quite satisfied with oneself. My dismal performance on Saturday have two positive effect on me. The first is the resolve to do better, the need to prove to oneself. And the second is a lesson  on pace.....slow and steady.....so today.....I began with speed of 8.5 and moving up to 9 (  normally it is 10 & 10.5). At speed 9 my body was at perfect harmony......the breathing and heartbeat ......no overexertion at all.....so I kept going on and on. The treadmill at Gold's Gym is programed to stop at 99 Minutes. I covered a distance of 14 Km. before restarting the treadmill again......but this time......even though my breathing and heart beat are both fine my leg especially the calves, not used to doing this distance are getting a beating so I had to walk a couple of kilometers and I pushed myself for another 5 km making the total at 19 km. By this time I am already tired but the idea of completing a Half Marathon was tempting. After a break of a few minutes,I refilled my water bottle  and again hit the treadmill a  for 3.22 km. Mostly walking and dragging myself as my calves muscles were acting up ( excess secretion of lactic acid?). This adds up to a total of 22.22 Km. , a little under 3 hours. I came back home happy and hearty!
( posted 30/06/2011)Just came back from Carter road, Joggers park( 15 laps) and back  approximating 11km.The month of June has been quite productive and eventful. First, the Half Marathon Distance have been done and second the total distance for June is 127 Km. This is good considering total of January till May is only about 170 Km.  A good month for Running!
Will be posting game-plan and Progress of the Month of July on my next post.

A New Approach for Running (02/05/2011)

YOUR LIFE  STARTS  HERE.  YOU  COMING ?
Since the start of this experiment under the "Run2Forget" program in  January this year I have covered  a distance of about 140 km, (give or take) on the treadmill at my gym ( GOLDS GYM). Though the figure appears to be  not so impressive considering this is done over a period of 4 months, the whole exercise gave me the will and motivation to push ahead. I will consider work done or distance covered till now ( Level I)  as a sort of warm-up for the next Level.
So, starting May, that is the current month we proceed with  Phase II of this operation. To make this more interesting we will now be doing inter Towns/City runs. Guidelines for the same are as follows
  • Choose Two Cities/Towns/Village/Checkpoints from anywhere in the world !
  • Find out the distance between the Two ( easily done on the net!)
  • Find out possible stops/towns  on the route along with their distance.( this may need a little research)
  • Choose a starting point and start running.
  • Report as you cover your distances.
Remember that your actual running is done on the treadmill at the gym/neighborhood, but your calculations and imaginations are on the route. Hence the name ' The Route Not Taken!'  One can update the distance covered as the days progresses mentioning a little bit of places on the route etc. I am quite excited like a little boy at the prospect of this exercise. And, now for me  to choose a route for myself !  if anyone is doing the same I wish them good luck!

Running Away your "Bokali Blues"

Today, I am basking under the feel good thought  of something that I had done two days ago. And that is the act of running continuously over One Hour  covering a distance of 11 km on the treadmill. This for me gives me a lot of satisfaction  as it represented something which I thought I couldn't do. I have been on and off ( mostly off!) the gym over a number of  years. But, one thing I was not able to do was to run for long time at a stretch.

It all started in January this year. By then I have met Mr.Puru the Guru who was attempting  to run the Mumbai Marathon (which he eventually did - congratulations!). He told me about the existence of a book called  " The Non-Runner's Marathon Trainer" by David A. Whitsett ( not available easily around here- I got my copy much later when my sister came back from the States!). This book says that anyone can run the marathon. In the absence of the book Mr.Puru the Guru was kind enough to give me a chart which he had modified for a Half Marathon.

As you can see, I did the first 5 runs and then stopped as I had to travel. But I was happy to know that I can run 4 Km at a stretch and was confident that this chart will work. I had promised myself that will definitely try this again when I prepare for a marathon (or half).
I began running again in March all the way till now averaging about only 2 times a week. But this time I am not following any routine.

GOALS:
  • Run 12 km. at a stretch effortlessly.
  • Cover 40 km. every week.
  • Reduce Body Fat Percentage to about 12%
  • Run a Marathon.
Still a long way to go, will keep at it.
Hopefully, at the end it may all come down to this (below).
Perseverance and Relentlessness required.
